Arthur Reginald Nichols was born in 1897 (Swaffham Q2-1897 4B:370), son of Arthur George and Mary Ann NICHOLS (née ROLPH)

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at the Ram Hotel, Bridge Street, Brandon, run by his grandfather Isaac ROLPH [56] born Lakenheath and grandmother Lois E ROLPH [56] born Hilgay. With them were his widowed mother Mary NICHOLS [35], uncle Arthur ROLPH [25] and aunt Annie [22] all three born in Lakenheath assisting in the hotel; his sisters Maggie [9] and Evelyn [7] both born in Thetford; his brother Walter [6] born Thetford.

His father died late in 1897

1911 census...Aged 13, an assistant at Smith's book stall, he was at The Ouse Hotel, Brandon with his uncle Arthur ROLPH and aunt Annie ROLPH (hoteliers), their children Doris E [8] and Cyril Arthur [3] both born in Brandon; his brother Stanley (Walter Stanley) a telegraph messenger. Not found his mother in this census.

He attested in London
The 9th Norfolks were at St. Jean (NE of Ypres) and on 2nd February the war diary gave:- Fine but cloudy, quiet day. Casualties 4 killed 2 wounded OR
